Shining a light on sustainability

2020 marks the beginning of a ‘decade of action’ – a critical period in which our society urgently needs to make progress and change course with regard to climate change, loss of biodiversity and social inequality.

Firstly, we need to significantly reduce CO2 emissions if we are to stay within the thresholds agreed as part of the Paris Agreement. Secondly, the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) established by the United Nations in 2015 must be achieved. There are therefore ten years remaining to bring about a meaningful change for a lower-carbon, greener society.

As a company that relies on renewable, recyclable resources, we are aware of our responsibility. Consequently, over the last few months, we have been striving to provide clarity and further sharpen our sustainability strategy.

How Sappi wants to ensure a greener future

To ensure a greener future, we have brought our sustainability priorities in line with the sustainable development goals established by the UN. After careful analysis throughout the entire Sappi Group, we are currently focused in particular on meeting the requirements of seven of the total of seventeen goals.

For example, let’s take a look at goal 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and consider what it means for us. Responsible consumption and production involves improving efficiency with regard to resources and energy. Sappi can help to support a circular bio-economy through our product innovations in particular. For example, we have integrated sustainability issues into our product development process and have set targets in relation to the introduction of new products with defined sustainability benefits.

Now it’s all about taking action. Plans for the decarbonisation of our plants as well as other initiatives are currently gaining momentum. With sustainable packaging solutions made from recyclable paper and paperboard. And with new content such as our video with which we want to highlight the issue even more for our customers, partners and society. Enjoy!
