Right on schedule: Sappi expands production capacity for high-barrier papers at its Alfeld site
Sappi, a leading provider of sustainable, paper-based packaging solutions, is further expanding its capabilities to produce recyclable high-barrier papers.
Beginning in September 2022, Sappi will be putting a cutting-edge coating machine into operation at its specialised paper mill in Alfeld. This in-house technology will not only increase coating capabilities, but also boost the development of innovative sustainable packaging solutions together with customers.
There is an indisputable trend in the packaging industry: More and more manufacturers are turning to renewable raw materials and recyclable materials for the sustainable outer packaging of their products. In doing so, they are in part even exceeding current consumer demands. Sappi offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-barrier papers that ensure the optimum protection of the packaged products’ quality. The papers feature secure barriers and deliver integrated heat-sealability and ideal recyclability.
To offer its customers state-of-the-art, sustainable alternatives to traditional film and foil-based material solutions at all times, market leader Sappi is continuously expanding its capacities for the production of barrier papers.
This includes the new coating machine for functional paper packaging at the company’s German site in Alfeld. With the construction of two new buildings, the optimal framework for the innovative machine was established in 2021. As planned, papers with an exceptionally high barrier (even under the most demanding climatic conditions) will be produced in Alfeld beginning in the second half of 2022.
With its investment in the coating machine, Sappi is further expanding its leading position in the field of innovative barrier paper solutions. In the future, customers will benefit from an outstanding delivery capability thanks to higher production capacity and a shorter supply chain. Moreover, the innovation leader intends to tap into new customer groups through the unique combination of paper and dispersion coating technology, offering them even more competitive and attractive paper packaging solutions.
